Akagera National park

Neighbouring Tanzania, the Akagera National Park is the only Savanah Park in Rwanda but it still offers a good mix of big game sightings like zebras, lions, elephants, black rhino, kobs, bushbucks and a refreshing option of community tours that gives you a first-hand opportunity to experience local cultures. It is also a habitat for several bird species thus offering a great variety for the birding traveler.

One day tour- Akagera National Park for a Wildlife Safari

After a very early breakfast, depart from Kigali at 5AM and head straight for the National Park. This journey will take you about two to three hours. Along the route, you will be treated to stopovers whee you can have opportunity to take photos of the great landscape of undulating hills and valleys.

8 AM: Arrive at the park and embark on a game drive in search of the big game like giraffes, Zebras, buffaloes and the recently introduced king of the Jungle- Lions. The game drive will take most of the morning and early afternoon.

12.30 PM: Lunch at Akagera game lodge.

2 PM: Depart the park and head straight back to Kigali. Arrive in the evening for a relaxing evening and dinner of choice.

2- Two Day Akagera National Park wildlife safari

This two day safari will give you exclusive wildlife experience with an encounter of the big game mammals like elephants, zebras, giraffes, hippos and buffaloes and the recently introduced lions.

Day One.

5 AM: After a very early breakfast, depart from Kigali at 5AM straight to the National Park. This journey will take you about three hours. Along the route, you will be treated to stopovers of the great landscape of undulating hills great for photo shoots.

8 AM: Arrive at the park and embark on a game drive in search of the big game like giraffes, Zebras, buffaloes and the recently introduced king of the Jungle- Lions. The game drive will take most of the morning.

12.30 PM: Lunch at Akagera game lodge.

After lunch, take a boat cruise on Lake Ihema and again have another encounter with big water game like Hippos and crocodiles and a relaxing boat cruise.

Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge (Mid-range) or Ruzizi tented camp.

Day 2: Game drive in Akagera national park

After an early morning breakfast, we will try a good mix of sighting the over 500 bird speicies as well as wildlife. This will take most of the morning before mid afternoon departure for Kigali.

3- Six- Day Rwanda Wildlife/ Gorilla Safari

Day 1: Our Driver guide will pick you from the airport and transfer you to your hotel as arranged

Dinner and overnight at the Kigali Radisson Blu (Luxury), Hotel Villa Portofino (Mid-range).

Day 2 Today we will spend the day touring the city.

7AM: After an early morning breakfast, our first stop will be the Genocide Memorial and then straight to Kandt National Museum and the craft centre. This will last about 4 hours. The memorial will give you interesting insights into the history of the country.

Lunch and departure for Akagera National Park. The almost two and half journey will take us through the eye catching landscape of Rwanda which are ideal for photo shoots. Arrive at Akagera National Pak and check in at the hotel.

Dinner and Overnight at Ruzizi tented camp (luxury), Akagera game lodge (mid- range)

Day 3: Wildlife adventure at Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s largest park

After breakfast, the tour guide will pick you as you commence the game drive in search of the big game like giraffes, Zebras, hippos, buffaloes and the recently introduced king of the Jungle- Lions. The game drive will take most of the morning especially in the northern section. For birders, you have the opportunity to explore the over 500 species of birds.

12.30 PM: Lunch at Akagera game lodge.

After lunch, take a boat cruise on Lake Ihema and again have another encounter with big water game like Hippos and crocodiles and a refreshing cruise.

Day 4: Gorilla Tracking journey.

After the eventful big game day, we commence the most memorable part of our safari- tracking the giant Mountain Gorillas that will blow you away.

After an early morning breakfast, we depart the Akagera National Park and head straight to Volcanoes National Park for gorilla tracking. The journey will take us through Kigali city again and then head north to the Volcanoes in a 2 hour drive. We recommend a few stop overs for great photos.

Arrive at lodge for dinner and overnight in preparation for the big day. This will require sufficient rest.

Accommodation options include Mt Gorilla view Lodge (Luxury), Le Bambou gorilla lodge (Mid-range) and Garden palace (budget).

Day 5: Gorilla tracking.

Welcome for the most exciting part of the safari which will take us through the thickets of the Virunga in the volcanoes National Park. This part of the safari also allows you to experience a bit of Rwandan cultural performances.

After breakfast, your driver guide will take you to the briefing area. This briefing is quite important because there are specific attributes and behavior required while in the presence of this gentle giants.

After the briefing, you then start the actual tracking which can last one hour or several hours. The experienced guides follow particular paths and detect traces of the movement of the gorilla. After a couple of hours, you will come face to face with this amazing creatures and have great moments for photo shoots. Time with the gorilla is limited but it is well worth it.

Day 6: Our safari ends here and depending on your flight schedules, we will arrange to drop you off at the airport. We hope you have enjoyed your safari in this country and will visit again.

GORILLA TRACKING TIPS:

Time spent with the gorillas is restricted because of their sensitivity and health risks as endangered animals.

Because the tracking can take few or even many hours, enough rest is recommended with plenty of water and warm clothing, rain gear with water proof boots.

Photography is accepted, but no flashing.

No eating, drinking or smoking in the presence of gorillas. Guides will advise on when to take your packed snack
